Instagram's new experiment turns video posts into reels

Instagram is seen investing heavily in relay and we all know it is one of its priorities. The social media platform recently tested a TikTok-like, full-screen UI for its feed (although, it wasn't the most popular) and is now testing a new feature, which will convert video posts into reels.

Reel, reel everywhere?

Instagram has confirmed that it is testing a feature that will automatically generate videos posted as a feed post in a relay. An Instagram spokesperson confirmed the news to TechCrunch. "We're testing to improve the Instagram and feature video experience as part of our efforts to simplify,"

The idea behind this is said to facilitate the presence of videos on the platform. It's being tested with a small number of people, and those who are part of the test will get an in-app pop-up, suggesting that video posts will now be converted to Reels. A screenshot of it was shared by Matt Navarra on Twitter and here's a look at it.

If a user's account is public, the converted-to-reel video post will be discoverable by everyone and others can use its audio for other own reels. A remix can be created but it can also be restricted. If the account is private, it will only be visible to followers.

But we don't know if this feature will apply to existing videos on Instagram. Also, no word on how this works for videos posted in landscape orientation It also remains to be seen when and if Instagram plans to make this feature public to everyone.

It's another attempt by Instagram to expand the reach of videos and reiterates the Meta-owned platform's new branding, which says it's no longer a photo-sharing platform. We will see how this test fares, it may polarize thought. Stay tuned for more updates on this and share your thoughts on Instagram's new experiment in the comments below.
