The EU may finally develop a standard for USB Type-C devices next week
For years, we've heard that USB Type-C is becoming a standard for smartphones, earphones, and many other devices, and the European Union is constantly making moves. But, it is 2022 and this effort has not reached a conclusion. This is likely to change as the EU is said to be ready to finalize charging standards around the world. Here is the latest update.
iPhone with USB Type-C coming soon?
A recent report from Reuters reveals that EU lawmakers and EU countries will hold a meeting on June 7, which will likely end the proposal to adopt USB Type-C for devices. It is expected to favor USB Type-C. If made official, smartphones, headphones, and even tablets should start featuring a USB Type-C port for charging.
It is said that the meeting may also discuss the possibility of including laptops in the list of devices that support standard USB Type-C. Although the proposal, if passed, would primarily be for wired charging, the EU also wants to include wireless charging and aims to "harmonize" it by 2025. However, EU countries want a long time for this change for technical reasons, of course
USB-C for all our devices sounds like a viable option to save money, get rid of the hassle of having multiple cables, and then there's the e-waste bit too, which will benefit the environment in the long run. While the EU seems quite keen on making USB Type-C a standard for everyone, it remains to be seen if the said meeting actually takes a positive turn. And if it does, we never know when OEMs will eventually adopt it for all their devices.
However, the decision could mean some trouble for Apple as the company has always opposed the decision because of how it will "stifle innovation and create piles of electronic waste." The company has been using its proprietary Lightning charger for its devices but past reports have indicated that the tech world wants to follow suit and ship its future iPhones with a USB Type-C port. The iPhone 15 is likely to be the first.
Anyway, we will update you on this. So, watch out for more details and so share your thoughts on the standardization of USB-C in the comments below.
