How to Record Webcam Video Using VLC Media Player
If you want to record your laptop or desktop webcam using a VLC media player, you can use the built-in feature called Capture Device and stream the captured video to a file. So what you're doing is asking VLC Player to capture your webcam feed and turn it into a playable video file.
This feature is accessible from the Media >> Open Capture Device option. Now on the open capture device, we'll use a feature called Direct Show that will allow us to select our webcam to stream/record.

Stream and record webcams using the VLC media player
Step 1: Open VLC Player in Menu > Open Capture Device or use the "Ctrl+C" shortcut key on your keyboard.
Step 2: Make sure to select the “Direct Show” option in the dropdown while you are in capture mode.
Step 3: Now choose your device to capture. Your webcam device name will appear in the dropdown.
If you want to record only audio then you can skip the video device name and choose only the audio device name option.
Step 4: Choose your microphone for the audio source that you want to capture the audio.
Step 5: Click on the Play by dropdown icon and select Stream.
Step 6: Click Next and click Add button to proceed to the next step.
Click Add button on the right side of the File option and select a file name and click the Next button.
Step 7: Now choose your desired file format you want to save the video recording as H264 + MP3 (MP4) format or H.265 + MP3 (MP4) file format as shown in the screenshot below.
Final step: Now when you stream the video from your webcam it will be saved as an MP4 file. Now you can stream and save your webcam footage at the same time using the stream option. Now VLC will be minimized and your webcam will start recording.
